A Year of Growth: Reflecting on My Operations Departmental Management Apprenticeship

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we asked Ellie, FIRST's Learning and Development Manager to reflect on her apprenticeship as she approaches her end point assessment.

Its hard to believe that a year has flown by since I embarked on my Level 5 Operations Departmental Management Apprenticeship with Newcastle University. As I approach the conclusion of this transformative journey through education and work, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences and support I’ve received along the way.

Journey with Newcastle University Apprenticeship Team:

From the beginning, the Newcastle University Apprenticeship team has been a central source of support. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of operational management, and their unwavering support has been a key aspect of my journey. Navigating the complexities of my role became so much smoother with their support, making my apprenticeship not just a learning experience but a collaborative and rewarding endeavour.

Connecting with Peers:

One of the most inspiring aspects of my apprenticeship has been the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals facing similar challenges in larger organisations. These connections have provided a unique platform to share experiences and insights into managerial situations. Learning from others who have successfully navigated complex scenarios has proven invaluable, offering me a broader perspective on effective management.

Applying Insights to Day-to-Day:

The real beauty of connection with peers lies in the practical application of shared insights. As I absorbed the experiences of others, I found myself better equipped to tackle different managerial challenges in my day-to-day responsibilities. This not only enhanced by problem-solving skills but also empowered me to support my team more effectively in their own professional development.

Critical Role in FIRST’s Growth:

In the past year, FIRST has undergone significant growth and the knowledge gained from my apprenticeship has played a crucial role in navigating these changes. The insights I’ve gathered have contributed to the success of our endeavours and have positioned us well for future expansion. The apprenticeship experience has proven to be an invaluable asset as we plan our company’s path moving forward.

Recommendation for Work-Based Apprenticeships:

For someone like me, who is new to management and lacked confidence in the intricate world of team leadership, a work-based apprenticeship has been a game-changer. I wholeheartedly recommend this approach to anyone in a similar position, seeking a structured path to developing managerial skills and creating a successful and harmonious team.

Conclusion:

As I approach my end point assessment, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the incredible journey this apprenticeship has offered. From the support of Newcastle University Apprenticeship team, my apprenticeship peers and to my team at FIRST, I have been able to grow as a manger. To those considering a work-based apprenticeship take the leap – it might just be the catalyst your career needs.
