Rachel Jammeh: From Dental Nurse to Counselling Entrepreneur

After dedicating 30 years to a successful career as a dental nurse, later specialising in orthodontics and management, Rachel Jammeh found herself seeking a new path. Five years ago, she made the bold decision to transition into counselling, embarking on an extensive period of study and training. She completed both a foundation degree and a bachelor’s degree in counselling, gaining hands-on experience by completing her clinical hours with various charities.

Since January, Rachel has been working part-time as a school counsellor, devoting two days a week to supporting students. Keen to expand her professional opportunities, she explored training courses through her local job centre and discovered FIRST. Recognising its potential to enhance her career prospects, she enrolled in the Level 2 Customer Ready Programme to sharpen her skills and prepare for the next stage of her journey.

Currently progressing through the programme, Rachel has found great value in connecting with like-minded individuals. She credits the course for inspiring her, helping her set weekly targets that keep her motivated and focused on both personal and professional growth.

Beyond her studies, Rachel is in the early stages of launching her own counselling business, Therapy Begins LTD. She has already hired a web designer to develop a platform showcasing her services, which will include one-to-one counselling, play therapy for children, and future expansion into workplace counselling aimed at supporting staff wellbeing.

Eager to establish herself in the business community, Rachel plans to attend networking events, including FIRST’s Biz ‘N’ Bait gathering. She is also keen to learn more about the 2025 StartUp Awards as she prepares to grow her business and reach more clients.

Rachel’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention, resilience, and lifelong learning. As she continues to develop her business, she remains committed to providing vital mental health support while forging new opportunities in the industry.
