Welcome to the November edition of TALK

Theme: Working With Others

FIRST Thoughts…

As we embrace November, we’re excited to explore the theme of ‘Working with Others’ and all it has to offer. This month, we’ll focus on building connections, collaborating with peers, and supporting one another within the communities we work with. Whether through attending networking events, joining forces on new projects, or uplifting each other’s efforts, we’re eager to see the impact that collective action can achieve.

One powerful example of what’s possible when we work together happened just last month, during a team-building exercise where we took an in-depth look at the learner journey. Each department shared their day-to-day role in helping us reach our “Big Hairy Audacious Goal.” This collaboration helped to smooth the path for potential learners, strengthened our team bonds and deepened our connection with those we aim to support.

Looking ahead to the new year, we’re excited to continue building on this momentum, embracing collaboration and new opportunities to work alongside others, driving positive change and making a meaningful impact together.

October’s Achievements:

Expansion

October marked a successful period for onboarding at FIRST, as two new staff members joined the team. Joanna has taken on the role of Senior Engagement Officer, while Sam has stepped into the position of Engagement Coordinator. Both are settling in well and bringing their expertise to their roles.

FIRST has found a new home just next door in a larger office space at PROTO, Gateshead, reflecting the growth of our team. With stunning views of the Newcastle skyline and the lively quayside, our new workspace offers a daily reminder of how lucky we are to live and work in the North East. This move brings a renewed sense of energy and connection to the local community we’re so passionate about supporting.

Escape the Rat Race

October saw the launch of our "Escape the Rat Race" campaign, featured at Metro stations and on metro carriages across the North East. The campaign was a huge success, receiving praise for its design and its inspiring message; encouraging people to break free from the 9-to-5 and take control of their own future through self-employment. Like our MD has done, if you see it out and about we’d love to see your selfies on LinkedIn or Facebook!

Didn’t get a chance to see it for yourself? Head over to our website to explore what we have to offer, so you too can ESCAPE THE RAT RACE!

Halloween

On the 31st, we celebrated the spooky season in style, treating everyone to festive favourites like toffee apples and mince pies. The "bewitching" day brought together good company, with just the right mix of tricks and treats to fuel and inspire.

As we embraced the festivities, we reflected on our mission to break down barriers and strengthen connections - whether through sharing a festive bite or by empowering learners to reach their goals. Celebrating the spirit of collaboration, community, and a touch of October magic! 👻🍏🥧

Level 1 "Understanding Enterprise"

October marked the first full run of this academic year’s Level 1 Understanding Enterprise course. During the final session, tutors hosted a fun pop quiz followed by a virtual celebration, bringing the course to a lively and engaging close.

From Passion to Profession: How Kerrel of Beach View Doodles is Turning Her Love for Dogs into a Thriving Business

Kerrel, a passionate dog lover from South Shields, has taken her lifelong affection for canines and transformed it into a promising business venture. Since 1st April 2023, she has been a licensed dog breeder, specialising in Labradoodles and Sheepadoodles. With a small but steady turnover of £25,000, Kerrel is determined to scale her business while maintaining the quality and care that her dogs deserve.

The Leap Of Faith

Driven by her love for dogs, Kerrel set out on this journey not just as a way to make money, but as a means to spend more time with the animals she adores. "It’s my passion," she explains. She carefully breeds her two female dogs, sourcing studs from other reputable breeders to ensure the best outcomes for her litters. Her dream is to have three litters of puppies a year, eventually reaching a point where demand is so high there’s a waiting list.

Ethical Steps:

However, this dream isn’t just about numbers. Kerrel is committed to ensuring that her puppies go to the right homes. She conducts thorough checks on potential buyers, requiring them to sign contracts that prioritise the wellbeing of the pups. These contracts stipulate that the puppies cannot be used for breeding, cannot be resold, and cannot be rehomed without her consent. In the rare case where a new owner cannot keep the puppy, Kerrel insists that the dog is returned to her. Every decision she makes revolves around the welfare of her dogs, ensuring they live in the best possible conditions.

Beach View Doodles is more than just a breeding business. Kerrel also offers dog-sitting services to people who have purchased puppies from her, maintaining a strong relationship with her clients and ensuring that the dogs are cared for even after they leave her home. In the future, she plans to expand her offerings into the dog accessories market, with a focus on branded collars and leads.

Kerrel’s Journey With FIRST:

Kerrel has found invaluable support through FIRST’s enterprise courses. After completing the Level 1 Understanding Enterprise course, she is currently enrolled in the Level 2 Customer Ready course, which she credits with reigniting her motivation. "FIRST has really relit the fire and gave me a push," she says. The information and resources provided have been particularly helpful, and she appreciates the camaraderie of the group setting. "It’s like a little band of people," she adds, describing the supportive environment at FIRST.

Future Hopes:

Looking ahead, Kerrel is eager to explore additional opportunities for growth. She’s interested in attending the 2025 Startup Awards North East and Biz ‘N’ Bait, events that will further her understanding of the business landscape and provide new networking opportunities.

With her passion and dedication, Kerrel’s vision for the future of Beach View Doodles is clear: a business where every dog is cared for with the same love and attention that she gives to her own, and where her clients—both human and canine—are always satisfied.
