GET STARTED - September 2021

Welcome to the September edition of Get Started!

Our theme this month is Motivation and Perseverance.

Thomas Edison, most well-known for inventing the light bulb, said:
‘Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up.’
This doesn’t mean that every failure could have turned into a success, but if you give up at every obstacle, how will you ever know?

Volunteering

In last month’s edition of Get Started, we posted some amazing volunteering opportunities and asked you all to take the initiative and apply for some positions you found interesting. Maybe you applied and didn’t hear back or perhaps you had the intention to apply but time got away from you.

Well, with the theme of this edition being motivation and perseverance, we’ll be posting another set of opportunities with 2 key things to help you to achieve your goals:

  • Stay motivated – Yes, it’s easier said than done. Motivation is such an important steppingstone to your success as being motivated means you’ll stay determined to achieve your long-term goals.
  • Persevere – It can be difficult to keep getting up when you’ve been knocked down. When you start to see your setbacks as challenges and obstacles as opportunities, perseverance will become second nature to you.

Below is a list of volunteering opportunities available around the North East region, which can help you to get hands on experience as you persevere to reach your own goals, and helping the community, while working with like-minded people can help you to keep motivated as you make a difference by helping people.

Motivation and Perseverance is one of the Entrecomp Competencies and can be described as ‘being determined to turn ideas into action. Being resilient under pressure, adversity and temporary failure. Being prepared and patient to achieve your long-term goals.’

Think about what these words mean to you.

Motivation and perseverance can help you to stay optimistic and look at situations in a hopeful way, rather than thinking that the worst is going to happen. It really doesn’t matter what goals you want to achieve, or how long it’s going to take to achieve them. Having these two important skills will help you to carry on until you’ve reached the objective.

For example, perhaps you’ve just finished university, you’re unemployed and ready to start a brand-new career, you apply for jobs that relate to your skills, qualifications, and ambitions but you keep getting that dreaded rejection email. So, what do you do? How easy would it be to give up and say to yourself “ah well, I tried.” This is where motivation and perseverance can really make a difference because you won’t just give up, you’ll carry on until you land your dream job.

If you’re looking for a bit of motivation and information on what direction to take next, maybe you’re interested in starting your own business, our free Understanding Enterprise course can help. But don’t take our word for it, Leanna and Matt are two of our previous graduates from the course, they showed a lot of motivation and perseverance during the pandemic, and they’ll tell you all you need to know about how much this course will help you discover your next steps.

Of course no one can be motivated and have perseverance 24/7 we’re all human and often have to face different challenges so these tips can help you along the way…

Build a support network – If you’re going to push through difficult challenges, then you’re going to need a little support along the way. Friends, family and co-workers are a good place to get encouragement and add that bit of motivation to carry on and they’ll be able to give you feedback when something hasn’t gone to plan.

Set clear goals and stages for success – We mentioned earlier that it doesn’t matter how long it’s going to take you to reach your goals. If they seem to be a long way away, it’s helpful to set out what your goals are clearly and what stages you need to get to reach the end. These stages will not only tell you that you’re going in the right direction, but keep you motivated to reach your main aim.

Don’t fear failures – We talked a bit about making mistakes last month. Failing and making mistakes can be hard to take but are some of the best ways of learning. When you begin to see failures as lessons, you’ll start to use them as motivation to carry on, you become more resilient and find it easier to learn from and move past the errors you make.

Patience Padawan! – Building patience is just as important, if not more important than having the ability to persevere. As we talked about earlier, your goals may take months, maybe even years to achieve, having patience will stop you from becoming frustrated and losing that all important motivation to succeed.

Having motivation and persevering through the toughest times can be difficult, but the rewards for carrying on and pushing through can be well worth the hard work.
